After suffering a couple of unfortunate injuries, Kim struggled with her mobility. We recently spoke with her about how she’s been getting on with her Jorvik Tricycle, and how her electric mountain trike has helped her continue to lead an active lifestyle.
Kim first came across adult tricycles 35 years ago when her late father surprised her with a tricycle that had twin seats on the back for her two young daughters. She loved it, and this became their chosen mode of transport! She’d use it to take her children to school, to the shops, to playgroups and the playground.
Fast forward a few years and later on in her life Kim suffered a foot injury which left her with chronic pain and mobility issues. Having previously led an active lifestyle, Kim struggled to come to terms with being unable to walk any distance and coupled with the constant pain, this was a difficult time in her life.
She would use her bicycle a lot to get about, and at the time she’d just purchased a puppy to train and compete in dog agility so Kim would cycle along with her pup running alongside her. Unfortunately, one day the dog tugged a little too hard on the lead causing her to fall off the bike. She found that she was stuck again, unable to exercise her dogs properly and wondering how she could maintain her active lifestyle.
Kim didn’t want the stigma of using a mobility scooter, so began looking into what other options there were. Having remembered the tricycle her father purchased her all those years ago she began looking into what adult tricycles were on sale. She managed to find a second-hand Jorvik Odin, which was an early classic model that is no longer sold, and her husband travelled 150 miles to collect it! It turns out it was worth the long journey – ‘’It was just amazing! I could go wherever I wanted as long as it was wide enough. I could go down tracks, river banks, hills and through forests’’.
During COVID, Kim was unable to run her cattery and it remained empty for 18 months. As she was unable to work she spent her time sewing and selling face masks. She eventually made enough to purchase a brand new Jorvik Tricycle, this time she purchased a JMT6. Kim opted for a JMT6 as she wanted an electric trike this time around, and knew she needed a tricycle with wheels that could withstand the off-road routes in her local area.
‘’Wow, did I feel great on this new shiny red trike! Everyone wanted to know about it and have a go. But, best of all it’s just amazing to continue leading an active lifestyle’’
Kim now uses her mountain trike every day as she uses it to exercise her dogs properly. Her dogs are very happy to trot alongside Kim as she cycles along, and she also uses the tricycle in the agility field during training. Additionally, now that her cattery is back up and running she uses her tricycle to go between her house and the cattery to save time and energy. Kim also loves to take her mountain trike on holiday with her. So far she has enjoyed exploring the Peak District and the North Yorkshire moors on her tricycle. Later this year they’ll be visiting Northumberland and Scotland and taking the tricycle with them!
‘’Thank you Jorvik for giving me a quality of life again’’
If you’re familiar with Jorvik’s story, you’ll know that Jorvik Tricycles began as James was searching for ways to help his dad continue to lead an active lifestyle despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Hearing from our community that our Jorvik Tricycles have allowed so many people to rekindle the joy of cycling, regain some independence and keep active is heart-warming!
